Finding a Small Computer Desk

When designing your home office, finding the right desk is the first step to creating the work environment you are looking for. Once you select the desk you are looking for, picking out a chair, lamp, and other office furniture is much easier. Picking your computer desk, however, is an important step that deserves some careful consideration.

How much space do you have?

Before you get too far into looking around, it is important to know how much room you have to work with. If you are designing a home office that will be tucked away into the corner of your bedroom, kitchen, living room, or other existing space, you might require a small computer desk. Measure out the space and write it down. Go check out a furniture or second-hand store and find a desk or table that meets your maximum dimensions. If the size you have selected is just too small to meet your requirements, you may need to revisit your home office layout before proceeding.

What style suits your fancy?

There are many different types of small desks to choose from. Rolltop desks and Secretary desks can work well if you are looking for a laptop desk that is easily concealed. Of course, corner desks (also called "L-Shaped desks") work well for rooms where you only have a corner to work with. Armoire desks are great for bedrooms and living rooms and some can easily conceal a PC, printer, and files. You can even repurpose a table as a "standing desk" - not ideal for working at all day, but great for those users who might spend under an hour a day at the desk and prefer being on their feet. Finally, you can find desks made out of nearly any material - wood, glass, steel, and even aluminum are used in building quality desks.

What will the desk be used for?

Often the most overlooked question in selecting a new small computer desk, you have to know exactly how the desk would be used. Will you be sitting at the desk 8 hours a day? Will you need space for a keyboard or printer? What types of storage requirements do you have? Write down your top 5 or 10 requirements for your computer desk and keep them handy as you visit stores or shop online.

What is your budget?

An obvious question, but know how much you would like to spend before you start looking. Some decent desks can be found for under $500, but you will quickly find that most high-end desks sell for well over $1000. If you are able to find a desk at a secondhand store, you might be able to get one for $500. However, desks are always in high demand so it will take some looking.

With so many different types of small computer desks to choose from, picking out the right desk can be a fun process. Just know what you want going in and you will find a desk that gives you exactly what you are looking for.
